Players and teams

How players are stored, teams are created and tournament lineups are assembled.

Players and teams form the lineup of any tournament. The service stores club players, their ratings and statistics, and saved team rosters for team events. Club administrators select participants for each tournament from these records.

Player

A player represents a real person who plays at the board. Currently, club administrators add players; personal player accounts and self-registration are not available yet. In the future, players will have their own accounts to view statistics and tournament history.

A player has:

  • a name and a title, if specified;
  • an association with one or more clubs;
  • ratings for the relevant chess variants and time controls;
  • accumulated tournament, game and win statistics.

The same player can enter different club tournaments. Placements, results and substitutions are stored separately for each tournament. Completed rated tournaments update the relevant player rating. See Ratings.

Once an administrator adds a player, the profile remains in the service beyond that tournament. Select the existing player in future events instead of creating them again, so their performance history accumulates.

Players and tournament participants are different

A club player becomes a participant only after registration in a particular tournament. This allows different lineups in different events: a player may enter one tournament but not another, or play on different teams.

In an individual tournament, a registered player is an independent entry in pairings and standings. In a team tournament, the player belongs to a team or, with random teams, stays in the player pool until the round’s teams are formed.

See Registering participants for adding and changing lineups.

Club teams

A team is a saved roster of club players. Teams are primarily used in fixed-team tournaments, where the same partners play together throughout the event.

During registration, an administrator can select an existing club team or create one by naming it, adding players and saving the roster. A saved team is available for future club tournaments, but entry in one tournament does not register it for others.

Registration records which teams and players enter the current tournament. Removing a team from registration does not delete it from the club.

Use random teams when partners should change between rounds. No permanent teams are created; the service forms temporary lineups before pairing. See Format and teams.

How it fits together

  1. The administrator adds players to the club list.
  2. If needed, they create saved teams from those players.
  3. During registration, they choose who will play in the tournament.
  4. Once the tournament starts, the service uses the registered lineup for pairings, results and standings.

Player profiles and saved teams avoid repeated data entry; registration defines the lineup of the current event.

Management access

All club page visitors can view players and statistics. Only that club’s administrator can add players, assemble teams and change tournament lineups.
