Game termination

How to record why a game ended and how technical results are handled.

Game termination

Important

Only club administrators can set and change game termination reasons.

A termination reason is a separate annotation on an existing game score. It records how the encounter ended; the score and reason do not replace each other.

For example, first choose 1–0, then Checkmate, Resignation or Time. If a win was awarded without normal play, use the same score and Technical.

Where to find the menu

First choose a result on the game card: 1–0, ½–½ or 0–1. On desktop, score buttons are stacked vertically and a button appears to their left: . It opens reasons applicable to the selected result.

Example menu for a win by either side.

A reason is optional. Clear removes only the termination annotation; the selected score stays unchanged.

Reasons for a decisive result

For 1–0 or 0–1, these options are available.

OptionWhen to use it
CheckmateThe game ended in checkmate.
ResignationThe losing player resigned.
TimeThe losing player ran out of time.
TechnicalA win was awarded without a normally completed game, for example due to a rule violation or absence. Set the score to match the awarded win.
White withdrawnWhite withdrew from the tournament or cannot continue. Usually paired with 0–1.
Black withdrawnBlack withdrew from the tournament or cannot continue. Usually paired with 1–0.
Both withdrawnBoth sides withdrew. Marks technical completion without a played encounter.

Selecting a reason does not change the score automatically. Check the result first, then save the reason.

Reasons for a draw

For ½–½, a different list appears.

OptionWhen to use it
AgreementThe players agreed to a draw.
StalemateThe side to move has no legal moves, but its king is not in check.
RepetitionA position allowing a draw by repetition has occurred.
50 movesA draw was recorded under the fifty-move rule.
Insufficient materialCheckmate is impossible with the remaining material.
TechnicalA draw was awarded without a normally played game.

Effect on calculations

Normal reasons — checkmate, resignation, time and normal draws — currently do not change calculations. They record game history and support future statistics. Standings, ratings and playoffs use the result itself: 1–0, ½–½ or 0–1.

Technical endings — Technical wins or draws and all withdrawal options — are handled differently:

  • excluded from normal played-game win, draw and loss statistics;
  • excluded from player rating calculations;
  • excluded from Buchholz;
  • count as completed when checking round or stage readiness;
  • retain the selected score in the standings.

For head-to-head calculations, Technical results count, while White / Black / Both withdrawn do not. Withdrawal also marks the corresponding side as eliminated in playoff series displays.

Recommendation

Choose Technical when both players were at the board but one broke the rules, refused to continue or received a technical loss for another reason.

If one or both players did not appear at the board or can no longer participate, use White withdrawn, Black withdrawn or Both withdrawn.
